Agree to disagree

Why is it that people feel it is important or even necessary to be in agreement on any given subject?

I’ve always been taught to welcome outside opinions and perspectives. I’ve never been taught that the goal is to be agreed with.

When I was growing up there was something called “Vive la’difference!”

I had the great fortune to be able to listen to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas speak at a breakfast not long ago. One of the points he drove home was vitally important to all of mankind throughout history but I think especially important to the people of today. He said that in all of his years as being one of “the nine” he cannot remember any subject on which everyone agreed. He went on to say that he cannot also not remember a time when any of “the nine” we’re ever disagreeable with one another.

The goal therefore should be to always at the very least respect fully disagree. The goal should not be to force, course or bully anyone into taking your opinion or perspective over their’s.

We are different people with different lives, upbringings, backgrounds and perspectives. We all have the right to hold on to whatever it is that which we hold dear. We do not, however, have the right or a constitutional expectationof unilateral, universal agreement.

I don’t know about you but I would find a world in which we all thought, dressed, spoke and dreamed I’d like to be very boring.

So I say again “viv la’difference!

Onward!
